The Carnival of Siena is a unique celebration, distinguished by the strong participation of the contrade, each of which organizes its own Carnival with local events and initiatives. Each contrada, in fact, celebrates the festival with parades, dances, and performances that involve its inhabitants, making the Sienese Carnival an opportunity to strengthen community ties and reaffirm the identity of each district. These celebrations, though diverse, are united by a common spirit of festivity and joy, culminating in an event eagerly awaited by the entire city.

On the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday, the whole city gathers together in Piazza del Campo, a neutral and symbolic space for all the Sienese. Starting at 4:00 PM, the square, with its characteristic shell shape, transforms into a grand open-air theater, where the population gathers in front of the majestic Palazzo Comunale. In this evocative setting, Cassandro, the ancient mask of Siena and a symbol of wisdom and irony, makes his appearance. The encounter with Cassandro represents the climax of the celebrations, a moment of great participation and sharing, which unites all the contrade in a collective embrace, celebrating the end of Carnival together.
