Mercantia was born in 1988 as a small event called “Teatralfestamercatomedievale,” with just a handful of street artist groups. Over the years, the festival has experienced exponential growth, both in terms of artistic quality and audience size. The tenth edition marked a fundamental turning point with the introduction of a true theatrical project, allowing Mercantia to establish itself as one of the leading street theater festivals internationally. Today, the festival attracts hundreds of artists from all over Italy and abroad, and welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Additionally, during Mercantia, the prestigious Premio Chiodo d’Oro is awarded in memory of Giancarlo Masini to an artist or company that has shown a deep connection to the event. The festival also provides a unique opportunity to explore and experience the charming village of Certaldo Alto, with its evocative locations such as Palazzo Pretorio and the Casa Boccaccio garden.

Mercantia is a celebration of street theater in all its forms: dance performances, music, juggling, tightrope walking, circus acts, installations, and craftsmanship. This festival is an explosion of wonder, magic, and imagination, set in the streets, squares, gardens, and crypts of the medieval village of Certaldo. With over thirty years of history, Mercantia has grown under the artistic direction of Alessandro Gigli, starting in 1988 with just 10 theater companies. Since then, the event has continued to expand, involving hundreds of artists from around the world and becoming a landmark in the international street theater scene.
