The Torches of Abbadia San Salvatore celebrate one of the oldest fire festivals in Italy, stemming from a unique millennia-old tradition that is deeply felt and widely participated in, renewing every December 24th in the city of Monte Amiata.

The torches are typical pyramid-shaped wood piles up to seven meters high, built in each district of the small medieval village, and stand tall until Christmas Eve night when they are set ablaze.

This event is prepared for starting in autumn when the torch builders begin gathering the materials to create these unique rural monuments, resulting from a demanding process that involves the entire community.

For months, using special techniques passed down from generation to generation, branches are smoothed and logs intertwined in the streets and squares of the town, defying gravity. It is a meticulous work that brings together young and old, in an exchange of knowledge that is tradition, heritage, and a legacy to be passed on.

Around the Torches, the past connects with the future: an ancestral fire ritual is celebrated, blending symbolic pagan and religious meanings, telling the powerful and indissoluble bond between man and nature.

The millennia-old celebration of Christmas at the monastery has deep and ancient roots dating back to the period following its founding. This event, originating with the erection of the monastery itself, saw villagers gather around the majestic church on Christmas Eve to commemorate the birth of Christ.

Over the centuries, this festival has seen the addition and development of many traditions and symbols. Beyond the evocative atmosphere of the fire illuminating the night, the celebration has been enriched by a living nativity scene, where actors portray the nativity scene, bringing life and realism to the event.

Additionally, bagpipers with their ancient melodies and groups of shepherds singing traditional songs add a touch of magic and nostalgia to the evening.
